Botox is a precription medication and should be prescribed after full consultation with a doctor. In Europe and the US, ONLY doctors prescribe and administer Botox. In the UK, Dentists have flooded the market despite concerns from their own regulatory body the General Dental Council.
Ideally your treatment should be performed by a SPECIALIST Surgeon (Facial plastic, ENT, maxillofacial, opthalmologist), Dermatologist or neurologist. All of these doctors use Botulinum to treat illness as well as wrinkles and have therefore had specifc and targetted training in it use.
You just have to google 'botox training' to realise that botox 'certification' in th UK is very easy. The trouble is that these courses teach 'x marks the spot injection points' without teaching any facial aesthetic analysis or musculature anatomy. If Botox injections were as easy as 'x marks the spot' , DIY botox kits with prefilled syringes and maps would already be on the market! The reality is that everyones facial muscle pattern and strengths are different. What works for one forehead would be catastrophic in another. This should be learnt by years of facial analysis but sadly is mostly learnt by trial and error... leading to lots of heavy or asymmetric brows and unhappy patients. The more 'certified botox practitioners' there are out there, the worse this is becoming.
Please also be wary of the common practice of self promotion in magazines articles and on websites offering facial rejuvenation. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen unfounded sweeping statements such as Dr X is.... an 'expert' .....'leader in the field'..... 'recognised authority' . The real leaders publish book chapters, papers and present their research at international meetings. They don't write it on their website! Do your own research, ask a practioner about this! Lastly the best endorsement of ability is personal recommendation from a happy friend!
